Mark Steinmetz South Central is a seventy-two-page cloth-bound monograph that includes fifty-seven duotone reproductions. Steinmetz’s photographs vividly capture human condition, incorporating both aggression and tenderness at the same time, while also depicting the isolation and displacement felt by young Americans. Created in the Knoxville, TN area, the images illustrate the socioeconomic condition of the region. The book’s title comes from the local
telephone company, South Central Bell telephone company. One recurring
theme throughout the work is South Central’s public payphones.
Steinmetz has work included in collections nationwide, including the
Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Museum of Modern Art, the Los Angeles
County Museum of Art, and the Art Institute of Chicago. He is also a
Guggenheim Fellow.
