Adobe InDesign for Photographers


April 4 – 25 / Wednesdays 5:30 – 8:30pm

Class Description

Learn the foundations of creative design techniques using Adobe InDesign. This beginner level course will teach you basic workflow techniques and concepts about page layout, typography, styles, and graphics in order to create promotional materials to showcase your work. The first two hours of each class will be instruction, followed by one hour of open studio time.

Meet Your Instructor 

Scott Herron has been in the creative field for his entire career. Once he realized the business/accounting track was not the best direction from his high school guidance counselor (and he’d always been interested in the arts) he graduated from SUNY Fredonia with a degree in Graphic Design and applied his skills to several Syracuse area design and advertising firms as well as some in-house opportunities. Creating solutions for packaging, brand identities, collateral, websites, interactive software games, digital applications, video direction and more to help several local, national and international clients establish and grow their brands. He also has helped students at Bryant & Stratton and students enrolled in Syracuse University’s VPA program craft their work and portfolios to realize their creative potential and impress Creative Directors in their employment endeavors.

How to Use Your DSLR Camera


April 3 – 24 / Tuesdays 5:30-8:30pm

Class Description


This class will teach you digital single-lens reflex (DSLR*) camera basics, in order to get the most out of your camera. Topics covered with include: camera modes, white balance, RAW, ISO, and proper exposure settings, specifically aperture and shutter speed. Get hands-on experience using your DSLR to capture your vision perfectly. While this class will primarily focus on the fundamentals of proper shooting settings, it will include an introduction to camera RAW processing through Adobe Photoshop to demonstrate the impact that proper camera settings have on producing a high quality file.

Meet Your Instructor 
Rachel Fein-Smolinski is an artist who works in photography, video, and installation. She received a BFA in Photography from the San Francisco Art Institute in 2014, and in 2017 an MFA in Art Photography from the school of Visual and Performing Arts at Syracuse University, where she taught photography and media theory courses. Her work uses sci-fi and adopts the authoritative aesthetics of biology and medicine to deal with neurosis and intellectualism. She has exhibited internationally, and is the recipient of numerous awards, including the 2016 Constance Saltonstall Fellowship in Ithaca, NY, and the 2016 Berlin Fall Semester Residency. She is currently the Digital Services Coordinator at Light Work.

Introduction to Photoshop

Class Description

Learn the foundations of adjusting and manipulating your images with Adobe Photoshop. This course will introduce workflow techniques and concepts for adjusting color and tone, resizing, saving, and printing your photographs through Print Tool. The first two hours of each class will be instruction, followed by one hour of open studio time.

Meet Your Instructor 
Taylor Clock is a visual artist who works primarily with photography and the printed image. His photographic works are as much about the subject matter of the image as they are the image-making process itself. He is deeply interested in the conceptual framework of photography and the medium’s connection to our collective understanding of the world. Clock is received a BFA in Graphic Design from State University of New York (SUNY) at Oswego and is an MFA in Photography candidate in Syracuse University’s School of Visual and Performing Arts.

Intermediate Photoshop

Class Description

Take the next step in adjusting and manipulating your images with Adobe Photoshop. This course will introduce workflow techniques and concepts for adjusting color and tone with selection tools and layer masks, compositing, cloning, and printing through Print-Tool. The first two hours of this course will be instruction followed by one hour of open studio time.

Meet Your Instructor 
Laurence Hervieux-Gosselin (1991) is a photographer from Montreal. She studied scriptwriting and communications at Université du Québec à Montréal and has a BFA in Photography from Concordia University. She is currently an Art Photography MFA candidate at Syracuse University. She is one of the Traveling Exhibition Winners of Fotofilmic’16 and was a finalist of the Ideastap Photographic Award with Magnum Photos in 2014.

Advanced Photoshop


October 2 – 23 / Mondays 6-9pm

This advanced level of Photoshop will teach you the necessary tools to be an expert in the field of photography. Learn about advanced layer masking and selection tools, image compositing, and ICC profiles. The first two hours of this course will be instruction followed by one hour of open studio time.

Meet Your Instructor 
Amrita Stützle is an artist who works in photography and video. She received a BFA in Art Photography from the school of Visual and Performing Arts at Syracuse University. Her work takes a cinematic approach at investigating the contemporary American service industry and the fleeting American Dream. She is currently the Lab Manager at Light Work.
