CONTEMPORARY PHOTOGRAPHY FROM
THE VISUAL AIDS ARCHIVE PROJECT

August 30 - October 17, 1999
Contact Sheet 103

The exhibition is a collection of photographs done by thirteen photographers diagnosed with the AIDS virus. Ernesto Pujol was the guest curator for the exhibition and decided to make the male body the images' unifying theme. The subject of the construction and deconstruction of the male body has also been one of the cornerstones of Pujo's work. Of the photographs he states, "The images spoke repeatedly about desire, the artists' desires, the models' desires and, ultimately, my own, elicited by theirs... The laboratory fact of HIV/AIDS need not mark, haunt, determine, or define either a life or a whole body of work, either an individual's or a generation's entire legacy."
