JUDY NATAL

Natal created 200 images while in Joshua Tree National Park, Ca, and has extended her study of "earth words" to landscapes in France and Italy. With this exhibition, it is her intent to "explore the parallel relationships between art and language, photography and language, and the origins of art and language, connecting the symbolic use of text and the visual aspects of language, with the constructed reality of photography and the necessity of the photograph to be read."

Text and images are excerpts from Contact Sheet 126, EarthWords This and other publications can be purchased from the Light Work store.

EarthWords

March 19 - June 30, 2004
Contact Sheet 126

For many years, photographer Judy Natal has been photographing archaeological ruins, and creating "parallel relationships between archaeology and photography." With the inspiration of the writings of Earthworks sculptor Robert Smithson, Natal says she "began to envision texts in the earth much like the archaeological fragments that I had been photographing." She received an artist residency at Joshua Tree, CA to investigate the language of the landscape. The images she took while on this extended residency comprise her EarthWords exhibition.
