FAZAL SHEIKH

The Victor Weeps
Afghanistan

November 12 - December 31, 2001
Contact Sheet 114

Some of the images presented in this exhibition appeared in Fazal Sheikh's book The Victor Weeps, published by Scalo in 1998. Sheikh uses narratives and pictures to unfold the conflicts that have ravaged the country and people of Afghanistan.

Sheikh understands the power of conflicting emotions and has tried to illuminate this seemingly unresolvable global friction throughout the work he has produced over the past decade. His effort in initiating The International Human Rights Series shows a commitment to hope and healing rarely achieved by any artist.

The terrible events of September 11, 2001, have put Afghanistan under a lens that is as cloudy and unfocused as our pain and confusion are clear and present. We may find our hearts filled with hate, seeking revenge and retribution, at the same time our intellect is telling us that these emotions rarely move us any closer to peace and justice.
