Light Work

Light Work has been supporting artists through the Artist-in-Residence program for almost thirty years. Our 1998 Artist-in-Residence, Zana Briski, was in the news recently. Zana's film "Born into Brothels" received an Oscar for Best Documentary Feature. Co-directed with Ross Kauffman, the film chronicles a group of children living in Calcutta's red light district. Zana taught the children photography to give them the means to tell their own story. The resulting images are shown as part of the documentary. Congratulations, Zana!

Artist-in-Residence:
Rik Pinkcombe

Light Work is pleased to introduce Artist-in-Residence Rik Pinkcombe. Rik comes to Light Work at the recommendation of Autograph, an association of black photographers in London. His current work touches on issues of perceived vs. staged reality. His large-format images question the common understanding of reality. As part of his residency, Rik has been photographing cityscapes in the Syracuse area and beyond. He is printing his images as chromogenic and digital prints.

Rik lives in London. Recent exhibition venues include the Stephen Lawrence Gallery in Greenwich and the 921 Gallery in Hackney, Great Britain.

Artist-in-Residence: Kanako Sasaki

While Rik has already been at Light Work for a few weeks, Japanese photographer Kanako Sasaki arrived just days ago. Kanako's work mixes a sense of girlhood with a hefty dose of spunk. Her playful series "Wanderlust" is rich in humor and vivacity. While at Light Work, Kanako plans to expand the series, and first color prints have already rolled off the processor. The series is inspired by childhood memories as well as Japanese traditional paintings and novels.

Kanako lives in New York. Her work was recently shown at Hitotsubo-ten Gallery and Morta Politica Gallery in Tokyo, Japan, and at the Visual Arts Gallery in New York City. Her photographs will be on view at the Art Cocoon Gallery in Tokyo, Japan in April.
