Learning Through the Lens (exhibition opening) ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Learning Through the Lens: Collaborations with Children
at the Edward Smith Elementary SchoolMay 9-December 31, 2006 Robert B. Menschel Photography Gallery, Schine Student Center, 303 University Ave, Syracuse, NY 13244 Light Work's upcoming exhibition, Learning Through the Lens: Collaborations with Children at Edward Smith Elementary School, will feature over 80 photographs, which explore the lives and visual imaginations of fourth and fifth grade Syracuse city school children. Also on view are images by Syracuse University photography students that examine the various facets of the school experience. Inspired by Wendy Ewald's "Literacy Through Photography" project, in which the artist hands over cameras to children to explore how they think, this exhibition is the culmination of the efforts of an innovative course, Literacy, Community, and Photography, offered through the College of Visual and Performing Arts in cooperation with the Department of Fine Arts in The College of Arts and Sciences. Team-taught by Judith Meighan, Assistant Professor of the History of Art, and Doug DuBois, Assistant Professor of Art Photography, and working in collaboration with Mary Lynn Mahan, Art Teacher at Edward Smith Elementary School, the course brought perspectives from both academic and studio backgrounds to the classroom. This project demonstrates how a strong relationship between the arts and the basic school curriculum can promote writing as well as visual literacy among students. Suzanne Opton: SoldierMarch 21–June 30, 2006 Light Work, Main Gallery, Robert B. Menschel Media Center Suzanne Opton's emotionally riveting exhibition Soldier continues. The lecture by Vicki Goldberg and gallery reception for the exhibition were a huge success. Around 200 people attended to hear Goldberg's insightful lecture on soldiers and their depiction throughout the history of photography. Goldberg also wrote the introductory essay for the exhibition catalogue, Contact Sheet 136. The exhibition remains on view at Light Work through June 30. The exhibition, extended programming, and billboards have been funded by the Central New York Community Foundation, and received additional funding by Syracuse University's PULSE program. Three of the five billboards in Syracuse are still in place. They are located at 350 West Fayette Street, on East Genesee Street near Irving (see image), and on Westcott Street. |
