Light
Work is pleased to invite you to a lecture by renowned photography
consultant and educator Mary Virginia Swanson and internationally
recognized artist and photographer Susan kae Grant. Swanson will begin
the lecture by discussing the most effective steps artists can take to
promote their artwork, including the use of websites, blogs,
self-promotional materials and more. Swanson will be followed by Grant,
who will discuss her
Night Journey exhibition, including
taking a project from conception to exhibition, and the option for
artists to travel with their own exhibition. While the presentations
and examples given are specific to photographers, they have relevance
for artists working in all disciplines.
Swanson's
expertise and advice have helped countless photographers move their
image making and their careers as artists to the next level. Swanson is
well-connected in the fine art, editorial and commercial arenas, and
has informed and inspired many artists toward building on the strengths
of their work within the fine art, commercial, documentary, and
licensing markets. In addition to presentations at almost every major
photography conference, Swanson has given educational presentations at
Pratt Institute in Brooklyn; New England School of Photography in
Boston; School of Visual Arts in New York; New York University's Tisch
School of the Arts; Tyler School of Art, Temple University,
Philadelphia; and the International Center for Photography in New York,
among other important institutions.

Internationally renowned artist Grant will lecture on inspiration and motivation for the working artist. According to Grant, "
Night Journey
represents a significant collaboration of artistic and scientific
inquiry into the nature of REM sleep, dreams, memory and unconscious."
The installation, which takes up an entire room, combines photographic
murals printed on chiffon fabric and the sound of whispered phrases,
all combined to mimic the overlapping experience of dreaming. Night
Journey has traveled to 12 venues so far.
Grant teaches
photography and bookmaking at Texas Woman's University, lectures at
museums and galleries internationally and has exhibited her work in the
United States, Canada, Europe, Australia, Africa and Japan. She also
teaches at the International Center of Photography in New York
City.
