Light Work Facts and Figures
Over 25,000 artists,
students, and patrons have used our state-of-the-art photo and digital lab to
make new work. Our community-access facility is designed for intuitive use to
create museum-quality art. Light Work provides equipment that is often not
available to artists otherwise, including a high-end Macintosh digital lab with
large-format printers and Imacon scanners, a black-and-white lab, and a
lighting studio.
Over
350 artists
from every state and over fifty foreign countries have been selected to
participate in our renowned Artist-in-Residence Program. The program
exemplifies Light Work's primary goal of supporting artists. Each year twelve
to fifteen artists are given housing, a $4,000 stipend, twenty-four hour access
to our lab, and generous staff support to work on their projects during
one-month residencies.
Light
Work's multiple galleries have featured over 400 exhibitions.
Four exhibitions are curated for our Main Gallery every year and are each
accompanied by an issue of Contact Sheet. Recent artists in the Main
Gallery have included Binh Danh, Ellen Garvens, Ben Gest, Kanako Sasaki, Pipo
Nguyen-duy, Suzanne Opton, Deana Lawson, Barry Anderson, Rachel Herman, and
many more. Other exhibition venues include our Hallway Gallery, Community
Darkrooms Gallery, the Robert B. Menschel Photography Gallery, and our large
flat panel displays.
The Light Work Collection includes over 3,500 photographs.
Most former Artists-in-Residence, such as Cindy Sherman, John Gossage, Sunil
Gupta, and more, are represented with early work that was made during the time
of the residency. All images in the collection can be viewed online at
www.lightwork.org. The collection allows easy searches by artist name or
keywords and the creation of custom slideshows. The collection adds to the
artists' visibility and is accessed especially by friends of photography,
researchers, curators, educators, and students. Light
Work has published 155 issues of Contact
Sheet, plus over fifty exhibition catalogues for the Robert B. Menschel
Photography Gallery. Contact Sheet is one of the longest-running art
photography publications in the world that has showcased contemporary
photographers since 1977. It has become the place where lovers of
photography-including museum professionals and collectors-turn to see the
latest work by emerging and mid-career artists from around the world. Contact
Sheet is completely free of advertising and is printed five times a year.
Since
the grant was created in 1975, 110 artists
have been awarded Light Work Grants in Photography. This program was
established to encourage the creation of new work and scholarship in Central
New York. Each year Light Work awards three grants of $2,000 to local
photographers, critics, or photo-historians as a way to acknowledge and support
local talent.
On
average 761 people visit Light Work's website
every day, adding up to at least 22,000 unique visits per month. The website
serves as gateway to many resources available at Light Work, including current
and past exhibitions, the Light Work Collection, the acclaimed
Artist-in-Residence Program, the increasingly popular Light Work Blog, and
online previews for Contact Sheet. The online store includes options to
purchase signed prints, books, and subscriptions to Contact Sheet.
