ARTIST LECTURE:

Elinor Carucci

February 7, 2006    6:30pm

Watson Theater, Light Work, 316 Waverly Avenue, Syracuse 13244

The College of Visual and Performing Arts at Syracuse University is proud to welcome renowned photographer Elinor Carucci to campus to talk about her work as an artist and her extraordinary career.

Carucci's images capture a feeling of intimacy through photographs of her family. She started creating images at age fifteen, viewing her mother as her "natural point of origin," and her "connection to the world." The images of her mother helped Carucci explore her femininity, and helped her grow and separate into her own life.

Her work has expanded from focusing on just her mother; she now photographs her father, brother, grandparents, among other family members. Her husband Eran has become an important subject and source of inspiration, much like her mother had been before. Carucci works in both black-and-white and color photography, and feels that color photography makes her work feel warmer and more vivid.

Carucci used to shoot mainly structured and posed shots, but started feeling as though something was missing from the images. She now shoots more intuitively, on the spot, with no planning. They depict what is happening, as opposed to environments she has created. Through this style, Carucci has created images in which she and her family have discovered more about themselves, learning about attitudes and feelings they couldn't necessarily see until they were captured in photographs.

Elinor Carucci received her BFA in photography from Bezalel Academy of Arts and Design in Jerusalem, Israel. Her work has been exhibited worldwide. She has received a Guggenheim Fellowship, an ICP Infinity Award, and a Buhl Foundation Grant, among other awards. Her work is found in the collections of the Museum of Modern Art in New York City, The Jewish Museum and International Center of Photography in New York City, the Houston Museum of Fine Arts, and others. She is currently a professor of photography at the School of Visual Arts in New York City.

The lecture will take place on Tuesday, February 7, 2006. It will begin at 6:30pm. It is free and open to the public.  This event is co-sponsored by Light Work, a non-profit, artist-run organization dedicated to the support of artists working in photography and electronic media.
