Binh Danh, One Week's Dead
August 14-October 23, 2007
Gallery Reception: September 6, 2007 5-8pm, Artist Lecture: 6:30pm
Artist Binh Danh has quietly gained recognition on the international art scene for his Vietnam War inspired work. This exhibition features his most recognizable work, comprised of appropriated war images that are printed directly onto leaves or grass. This process, in which Danh uses photosynthesis and sunlight to create the images on leaves, shows the artist's interest in science and varying photographic techniques. Of his work, Danh states, "Much of my research has explored my own personal history and has become a way of visually and physically recollecting my family's history and honoring their collective memory."
Light Work will host a gallery reception on September 6, 2007 from 5-8pm to celebrate this exhibition. In addition, Danh will give an artist lecture about his work, and will discuss how his work relates to Syracuse Symposium theme of justice. The artist lecture, which will begin at 6:30pm, was supported by Syracuse Symposium.
Danh was born in Vietnam in 1977. He received an MFA at Stanford University and a BFA from San Jose State University. His work has been exhibited in museums and galleries internationally, including the George Eastman House in Rochester, the Asia Society Museum in New York City, the University of Hawaii Art Museum, and at Haines Gallery in San Francisco. He lives and works in San Jose, CA. He participated in Light Work's Artist-in-Residence program in 2005. His work can be seen at www.hainesgallery.com.

Angelika Rinnhofer, Sammelsurium
November 5-December 28, 2007
Gallery Reception: November 8, 2007, 5-8pm
This exhibition, featuring the work of German-born artist Angelika Rinnhofer, will feature her large-format color prints from three related series, Menschenkunde, Felsenfest, and Seelensucht. She describes her series Menschenkunde as portraits that combine facts, beauty, and irony in a Renaissance-style. Rinnhofer's series, Felsenfest, continues the same aesthetics in its re-interpretations of martyrs and saints into a modern context. Rinnhofer remembers being frightened as a child when viewing the horrific images of tortured saints commonly found in churches in her hometown Nürnberg, Germany. She now casts a critical eye, juxtaposing religious figures with modern-looking scientists. Seelensucht takes Rinnhofer back to the traditional single-figure portrait, also capturing the themes of martyrs.
Angelika lives in Beacon, NY. She is a commercial photographer and artist. She is the recipient of a Kodak European Gold Award and received a fellowship in photography from the Dutchess County Arts Council. She participated in Light Work's Artist-in-Residence program in 2005. Her work can be seen at www.amrphotographie.com. Light Work will host a gallery reception on November 8, 2007 from 5-8pm for Angelika Rinnhofer's exhibition.
Other related programming may be announced closer to the exhibitions. Gallery hours for these exhibitions are Sunday to Friday, 10am-6pm, and by appointment. To schedule an appointment, please call 315-443-1300. Both the exhibition and reception are free and open to the public. Paid parking is available in the Marion Parking Lot and Booth Garage.
