Light Work Announces Upcoming Artist Lecture

Al Fasoldt—The Lost Photos of Vietnam

August 14–October 23, 2007
Artist Lecture: Thursday, October 18, 2007 6:30pm

Light Work is pleased to announce a special artist talk by photographer Al Fasoldt on October 18 at 6:30pm. Fasoldt's work is currently on view at Light Work/Community Darkrooms in an exhibition titled The Lost Photos of Vietnam.

The Lost Photos of Vietnam is comprised of images created by Fasoldt while working as the Vietnam Bureau Chief for US military-supported newspaper Stars & Stripes during the Vietnam War. When he left Vietnam to return to the US, he left his negatives behind and brought a few souvenirs home—a dozen 8x10" prints and a collection of contact sheets of his photographs. Since then, the Pentagon has ordered all negatives of Stars & Stripes photographers be destroyed. Over the past few years, Fasoldt has been working to repair the prints and contact sheets he brought home years ago, using them to make prints of his Vietnam War images for exhibition. According to Fasoldt, "Nothing can bring back the original negatives. But this exhibition represents a triumph, however small, of modern photographic processing over crude attempts to erase an unpopular war from our national consciousness." Light Work will host an artist lecture by Fasoldt on October 18 at 6:30pm. The event is part of Th3, where the museums and galleries of Syracuse remain open until 8pm on the third Thursday of each month. For more information about Th3 visit www.th3syracuse.com.
