Light Work is currently accepting
applications for its 2006 Artist-in-Residence program.
The Light Work Artist-in-Residence program offers
artists working in photography and related media
a chance to spend one month working in a newly renovated,
state-of-the art darkroom and digital lab facility.
This opportunity is open to artists in the United
States as well as internationally. Located in Syracuse,
New York, Light Work is a non-profit, artist-run
organization dedicated to the support of artists
working in photography and electronic media.
Each year Light Work invites
twelve to fifteen artists to participate in the
residency program. Each artist is invited to live
in Syracuse for one month, and they receive a $2,000
stipend, a furnished apartment, a private darkroom,
and 24-hour access to our facility. Their work
is also featured in Light Work’s
quarterly journal Contact Sheet, which is an award-winning
photography publication distributed throughout the
United States and internationally.
Participating artists are expected to spend the
month pursuing their own projects, whether they are
photographing in the area, printing, preparing a
book or portfolio, etc. There are no obligations
for artists to teach at the Light Work facility,
although it is always a hope that participants will
be friendly and accessible to local artists. In return,
each artist leaves Light Work with a few examples
of the work made during their residency to add to
the growing Light Work Permanent Collection.
The newly renovated lab facility
can accommodate just about any black-and-white
process from alternative processes to mural printing,
and the color facility includes a Hope 32" color processor. In addition
to the black-and-white and color darkrooms, artists
have the opportunity to work in a color managed digital
imaging lab, featuring Macintosh G4 workstations
equipped with flatbed & film scanners. Output
includes a 36" Hewlett Packard 2500CP large
format digital color printer, a 42" Roland HiFi
Jet six-color printer, and a new 44" Epson seven-color
printer that can render continuous gray-scale and
color prints onto a broad variety of materials. Artists
have access to Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, Quark
Xpress, InDesign and Macromedia Director Studio,
Flash, Dreamweaver, Final Cut Pro and DVD Studio
Pro software packages, and more.
The Artist-in-Residence program has no official
application forms or deadlines. Applicants are required
to submit a letter of intent, which generally describes
the project or type of work they would like to do
during the residency. They also must submit slides
(or proof prints) of recent work, a resume, an artist
statement, and any other supporting material that
may be helpful in evaluating the application.
