Contact Sheet 104: Steve Cagan
Paperback: 32 pages
Publisher: Light Work (November 1, 1999)
Contact Sheet 104 features 28 duotone reproductions of photographs by Steve Cagan. For several years, Cagan has been documenting aspects of the work and social lives of rank-and-file Cubans, and trying to understand and communicate something about their ideas and attitudes about the changes their society is undergoing. His photographs encourage a richer, more complex vision of the Cuban reality. Using portraiture as a major element of his documentary work, Cagan allows his subjects to participate in their own presentation.
Steve Cagan’s photographs are in the permanent collections of many major museums, including the International Center of Photography, New York; Bibliotheque National, Paris, France; and the Museo de Arte Moderna, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. He’s been the recipient of numerous awards for his photography including, a Fulbright Fellowship; Arts MidWest Fellowship and a New Jersey State Council on the Arts Fellowship. He currently lives in Cleveland Ohio and is a member of the co-op photography agency, Impact Visuals.
