Steinmetz's photographs vividly capture human condition, incorporating both aggression and tenderness at the same time, while also depicting the isolation and displacement felt by young Americans. Created in the Knoxville, TN area, the images illustrate the socioeconomic condition of the region. The book's title comes from the local
telephone company, South Central Bell telephone company. One recurring theme throughout the work is South Central's public payphones.

The book is the culmination of a decade-long project that looks at a group of Latino boys in Williamsburg, Brooklyn whose passion is in-line skating. For the project Cianni documented them on and off their skates to provide a vivid portrait of their lives through photographs, video stills, and commentary from the skaters themselves. A DVD with footage of the skaters and an interview with Cianni is also included.
