Raft of the Medusa

Raft of the Medusa is the result of a three month long collaboration between the artist and long-time friend, Gus Horn, who is a rancher, community activist and art collector in the small community of 100 Mile House in central British Columbia and the residents of this economically ravaged community. The production ultimately involved a cast and crew of well over 40 people and a set that included a three-story tall scaffold to hang the backdrop for this recreation of the eponymous Géricault painting, part of the permanent collection of the Louvre. Local students met each week at the high school in preparation for the final tableau vivant, practicing yoga to develop their ability to hold the poses and studying the painting to get in the right mood.

Dad and David Visiting continues Hannah’s exploration of the connections between photographic portraiture and video. Here the moment explored is not one of arrested motion, but of reflective regard as the subject of the portrait looks back at the viewing public from a place of intimacy and repose.

About the Artist
Adad Hannah is a Montreal-based artist who has exhibited internationally, including at the Musée National des Beaux-Arts du Québec (2008); the Musée d’Art Contemporain de Montréal (2008); Zendai MoMA, Shanghai (2009), and Vancouver Art Gallery (2007); among many others. In 2004 he won the Toronto Images Festival Installation/New Media Award, and the Bogdanka Poznanovic Award at Videomedeja 8.. He has produced works at museums including the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, the National Gallery of Canada, the Vancouver Art Gallery, the Rodin Gallery (Seoul), and the Prado Museum (Madrid). He is represented by Pierre-François Ouellette Art Contemporain.
