Description

Good and Bad Hair is a photographic exploration of contemporary African American hairstyles. The images illustrate that hairstyles are a large part of African American culture, sometimes leading to acceptance or rejection. The photographs show not only popular hairstyles, but also African Americans who express their sense of self and identity through their hair.

Bill Gaskins received his BA from Tyler School of Art, his MA from Ohio State University, and his MFA from the Maryland Institute College of Art. He is a cultural critic, whose writings looking at film, media, and photography have been published numerous places including Afterimage. Gaskins has been a professor at the School of Art Institute in Chicago, Howard University, the University of Missouri, and Parsons School of Design.
