Description
Light Work at 50 celebrates five decades of supporting artists at Light Work. Along with selections from Light Work’s collection, we have compiled hundreds of pieces of ephemera, an extensive chronology, and new writing from Andy Grundberg and Jeffrey Hoone.
Phil Block and Tom Bryan founded Light Work in 1973 as an artist-run, non-profit organization, which was then led by Jeffrey Hoone from 1982-2021. Through residencies, exhibitions, publications, and a community-based digital lab and darkroom, Light Work’s mission is to provide direct support to emerging and under-represented artists working within the realm of photography. Located in the Robert B. Menschel Media Center at Syracuse University, Light Work has provided state-of-the-art facilities to over 25,000 students, artists, and community members. Along with our lab facilities, exhibitions, and over 200 publications of Contact Sheet, The Light Work Collection contains over 4,000 photography-based work from artists such as Carrie Mae Weems, Cindy Sherman, Jim Goldberg, Pacifico Silano, Hank Willis Thomas, and Wendy Red Star.
Light Work at 50 documents our long-standing history, but also acts as a means of inspiring the next generation of artists and supporters alike.
