Description

Matt Black documents rural life in California’s Great Central Valley. He has photographed extensively in rural California, completing a series of long-term projects on migration and daily life in its farm fields and small towns.

Matt Black’s work from rural California has been widely published and exhibited, and has been honored with grants and awards from the Robert F. Kennedy Memorial, the Alexia Foundation for World Peace, the National Endowment for the Arts, the Rockefeller Foundation, the California Arts Council and others. He has also photographed in Latin America, work that has received awards from the World Press Photo Foundation and the National Press Photographers Association. His work has also been honored by the Sunday Magazine Editors Association and Communication Arts. He participated in Light Work’s Artist-in-Residence program in 2003.
