Description

Nathan Lyons is a true renaissance man in photography — artist, author, curator, historian, educator, archivist, activist, mentor. He is best known as an image-maker for a lifelong trilogy of publications that are sequenced images of the urban landscape. Starting with Notations in Passing (1974), the work is densely referential to American culture, symbols, and clichés. For some critics, the work could be labeled as “street photography” or as “equivalents,” but the intellect that knits the image sequences together surpasses these insufficient comparisons. In addition to tireless work for the medium (editing/writing for Image and Aperture), Nathan Lyons founded Afterimage in 1972, was a founding member and the first Chairperson of the Society for Photographic Education (1963), and has the international respect of almost every person in the realm of photography.
