Description

Contact Sheet 84 features the work of Sylvia de Swaan from her Return series, with an artist statement by de Swaan and an essay by Adrian Giurgea. The series is about memory and identity, and according to de Swaan, “It is a self-portrait and a journey, a quest for remnants of history erased by war.”

—

Sylvia de Swaan was born in Romania in 1941. Her work has been exhibited internationally. She used to be the director of Executive Director of Sculpture Space in Utica, NY, and teaches as a visiting instructor of art at Hamilton College.
