Description

Raymond Meeks’ work in photography is an extension of his life and family. It stays with viewers because of this inherent honesty and his way of uncovering simple beauty in the things around him. Since 2000, Meeks has produced over twenty publications, of which twelve have been self-published and distributed. Many of Meeks’ books can be difficult to find, yet to view any one book will be a memorable, emotional experience for most. For this exhibition at Light Work, we are lucky to exhibit more than fifteen books, including his Orchard collaboration with other artists.

This catalogue includes a conversation between Raymond Meeks and Light Work’s director Shane Lavalette.

—

Raymond Meeks was born in Ohio in 1963 and spent many formative years creating photo-essays for magazines and photographing his immediate family while living in Montana and the Pacific Northwest. Meeks is the co- founder of Orchard (published by Silas Finch), which was established as a collaborative conversation between artist, subject, and viewer. Featured artists have included Wes Mills, Deborah Luster, and Mark Steinmetz. Issues 4-6 are in planning stages. He has published four monographs with Nazraeli Press, as well as numerous, self-published titles under his imprint, Dumbsaint Editions. In 2011, he authored pretty girls wander which was cited as one of the years best photo books by Todd Hido, John Gossage, and Gerry Badger. Orchard Volume 1: Crime Victims Chronicle, was nominated as international “book of the year” by Gerry Badger and is included in The Photobook: A History Volume III. He currently lives and works in Upstate New York.
