Flat Tires

June 15–August 7, 2026
Jeffrey J. Hoone Gallery
Closing Reception: Friday, August 7, 5-7pm

The car is possibly the most ubiquitous and durable photographic subject. It is deeply embedded in daily life and the collective imagination. It operates as a site of self-expression, a space for solitude and a canvas upon which individualism is expressed. The car carries profound contradictions. It is a carefully engineered object of design, a status symbol, yet also a source of stress, expense, and annoyance. It offers freedom and escape but can leave you stranded in the middle of nowhere. It is a dangerous, deadly, machine we allow 16-year-olds to operate. It can be an object of beauty or an eyesore or both at the same time. The photographs in this exhibition explore the car in its many forms and potential meanings. The images oscillate between intimacy, spectacle, utility and fantasy. They showcase how this enduring subject is completely customizable.
