Jeremy Dennis is a contemporary fine art photographer born in 1990. A member of the Shinnecock Indian Nation, he uses his work to explore Indigenous identity, assimilation, and tradition. Dennis was one of ten recipients of a 2016 Dreamstarter Grant from the national non-profit organization Running Strong for American Indian Youth. His award of $10,000 enabled him to pursue his project, On This Site, using photography and an interactive online map for an exhibition and book focusing on culturally significant Native American sites on Long Island. This topic has special meaning for Dennis, who grew up on the Shinnecock Nation Reservation. In 2018, Dennis received the Creative Bursar Award from Getty Images to continue his series, Stories—Indigenous Oral Stories, Dreams and Myths, begun in 2013. Inspired by North American Indigenous myths and legends, the artist staged scenes that transform these supernatural tales into depictions of actual experience in photographic images. Dennis holds an MFA from Pennsylvania State University and a BA in Studio Art from Stony Brook University in New York.
