Paula Damasceno

Paula Damasceno is an interdisciplinary conceptual artist and scholar born in 1975 in Rio de Janeiro City, Brazil, who has been based in Greensboro, North Carolina since 2012. Paula’s works comprise inquiries about history, archives, and culture. Paula focuses on aesthetic strategies that evoke and invoke the past to contemplate the present and recreate futures. MoMa Photography Curator Lucy Gallun selected her work, Offerings, for Juror’s Choice Award Nomination. Offerings also won a Silver Award from the Budapest International Foto Awards 2020, appeared in the 2020 Hariban Award Catalog, won the 2019 SPE Innovation Award, won First Place at the 2018 Light Factory Throwdown Portfolio, and was an official selection to the Tokyo International Foto Awards 2021. Paula has exhibited work at the Greensboro Project Space Greensboro, Southeastern Center for Photography, and Weatherspoon Museum of Contemporary Art. In 2018 she earned a Bachelor of Fine Art with a concentration in Photography and a minor in Media Studies from the University of NorthCarolina Greensboro. Since 2001, Paula has worked in Brazil, Colombia, France, Germany, Mexico, the US, and Vietnam making art and video documentaries, and developing social practice projects.
